Why choose timber over uPVC for your doors?
Let us allow our hearts to rule our heads for a moment. Permit us one romantic reason: aesthetic considerations have to come top of the list.
Timber is a beautiful, natural product. Nothing can match the elegance of timber doors carefully crafted using traditional skills. They are a joy to use and they enhance your home and your lifestyle.
But wood wins hands down on practical factors, too.
It is warm. Wood is a great natural insulator against both heat and cold. The U values, used to measure thermal efficiency (the lower the value, the better the insulation) for timber are extremely low.
It is eco-friendly. It is the most environmentally friendly construction material, because trees absorb CO2 as they grow.
According to a 2013 report by Heriot Wat University, timber products such as windows and doors have a significantly negative carbon footprint.
This also takes into account factors such as lifespan, end of life recyclability, etc. As you would expect, uPVC, which is made from petrochemicals, has a massive carbon footprint by comparison.
It’s durable. Wood is also extremely long-lasting.
A new uPVC door usually comes with a 10-year guarantee, but a well-made wooden door will last indefinitely, for as long as it is maintained.
According to Barbour Product Search, an independent online product directory for the construction sector, wooden doors and windows have a reasonable life expectancy of over 60 years. When it does reach the end of its life, a timber can be recycled, with zero risk of plastics entering the marine environment.
It’s versatile. You have an infinite choice of finishes – whatever colour you want it to be – and you can change your mind as often as you like!
