Why is my staircase creaking?
Creaky stairs can be infuriating, particularly late at night and early in the morning.
However, the problem isn’t always easy to solve.
The main causes of squeaking stairs are the shrinkage of the timber treads over time, and general wear and tear, which is the most obvious reasons.
The tread(s) can start to rub against the top of the riser causing a squeaking or creaking noise.
Any adhesive originally used to bind the treads and risers together may also have become unstuck. This is normally just an annoyance, rather than anything seriously wrong with your staircase.
Why Is My Staircase Creaking

In most cases the best results are obtained by repairs from the underside of the staircase.
This is not always feasible as sometimes the staircase is blocked off from the rear.
It is, however, also possible to repair from the front of the staircase.

- Treads are the horizontal surfaces where you put your feet.
- Risers are the vertical surfaces in between the treads.
- Stringers are the sawtooth-shaped boards running up the sides of the risers and treads to keep the staircase together and provide support. Stringers on interior staircases are sometimes hidden inside the drywall.
- Banisters are the handrails running the length of the staircase.
- Balustrades are the posts that support the banisters.

Many interior staircases don’t allow easy access to the area underneath the stairs, but if yours does, you can silence squeaks from there for the sturdiest results.
